The Thanksgiving community gathering at the Senior Center yesterday was another success with almost 100 attending. We who prepare the meal enjoy it too.
Danny is out at Sheena's enjoying the snow in Elko.
Enjoy the rest of the Thanksgiving weekend and I'll try to get busy with this again.

Greetings from Elko, Nevada! The High Desert combined with the Swiss Alps-looking Ruby Mountains.

My daughter and son-in-law Sheena and Wayne have just bought their first home here after apartment living for seven years so it is very exciting. Actually we are in Spring Creek, a sprawling suburb of Elko, located halfway between Elko and the Rubies, as they call them here. Most houses in Spring Creek are really what I would call acreages so it isn’t like living in town, though neighbors are nearby.

Perhaps one of my ancestors was a mermaid—I love water. I cannot cross a river without wanting to go wading at least. Traveling this time on a relaxed schedule I frequently gave into the urge to get my feet wet... the Tongue, Snake, Gallatin, Salmon, Lamoille, and Thomas Canyon waters all called me. A few more details on that next week! I also especially enjoyed visiting the Little Big Horn Monument where Custer met his final defeat.

Sheena and I are off this Morning on more fun adventures: one more trail to hike then into Elko for museum, antique shopping and a Basque Restaurant for supper when Wayne gets off work.

There are many beautiful places in my America—God’s creation makes me feel small but happy!

But back to the beginning of my trip: let me update you on the Bridge Project. Several members of the Committee went to Ashland, MT, to “help” at the Amish Community, building rafters (they are done now), preparing the metal plates, laying out the floor braces. I was happy to get in on one day of this when the long-anticipated Douglas fir arrived from Oregon and we all wanted to jump for joy. It took an hour and a half to unload with a big—but not big enough Bobcat. Now the long process of getting bolts ready begins: many of the bolt stock have to be cut and re-threaded and some of the tie plate holes have to be enlarged. All this is being done now by our Amish contractor with only gas motors (no electricity there remember, but do they ever know how to use that old-style equipment). We are optimistic that the bridge assembly in Montana will be done by mid-fall and ready for transport to Edgemont for re-assembly. That transport will be another big step, anybody know any truckers that might help us?

Good Morning! Huge rain in the northeast part of our area: around Argyle Rd just into Custer County several places reported 3" rain and hard wind. At the ranch (6-8 mi southeast of Edgemont) we had just .20" and Bill Curran (5 mi north) had 0.60".

We also have received word that Ruth Hamaker passed away on Monday; there will be no services. Look for her obituary in the July 28 Tribune. You would remember I covered her 90th birthday party in the paper just a few weeks ago.

Rain again.
Pretty variable around Edgemont yesterday evening but everyone seems to have gotten at least a half inch and east of town (Millers, Kollers) were closer to an inch.

We had a good potluck picnic/ branding at the park yesterday afternoon: thanks to all who attended. Glad the rain held off till afterwards.

News: Lloyd Putnam of Burdock (rural Edgemont to some of you) passed away at home on Wednesday, June 23. There will be a Mass at 9 am on Monday at St. James Catholic Church in Edgemont and a Memorial Service at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Parish Center, both locations in Edgemont.

The State Veterans Home is in the news: you can read the details in next week's Edgemont Herald Tribune. The state is proposing to build a new Veterans Home and of course we want it built in the same location as the current Home in Hot Springs. Rapid City is courting the state to try to take it away from us...Sturgis is going to be a good neighbor and support Hot Springs' endeavor to keep it in Fall River County.

Whew! Not sure about the temp in Edgemont as I've been in Hot Springs all day, but it got up to 94 degrees where I am and that seemed warm!

Ah,ha! there's the first one: this is the unusual clouds that moved in after the storm on Tuesday evening. The photo was taken by my friend Lisa Norman as she was returning to Edgemont on Highway 18.
Then there was my friend John Minium who was stuck waiting for a train so he couldn't get any cool cloud pix but he did get a great rainbow and train pix. So I'll try to upload it now:

Yes, after I put my glasses on Sunday morning I realized we did not get a full 3/4 inch of RAIN, more like 0.60". And then last nite (Tuesday) we had a short but intense rain storm which delivered another 0.60" or so at my place. To say it is wetter than usual is putting it mildly...I am going to have to find someone to replace a culvert under my driveway first chance I get.

Sadly, I have learned of a DRUG BUST in Fall River County on June 16 and the following people are to appear in court on June 30 after having been charged with drug-related crimes: they are Daniel Willis, Leo Herman, Vernon Evans, Tonya Moen, Bruce Lewis, Beth Lolley, Connie Lolley, and Philip Grenole. I am sorry to see names I know in this list but I am glad that law enforcement is making some effort to put a stop to the dealing of drugs which we have observed so frequently in Hot Springs.

The JAIL COMMITTEE met today and visited with architectural engineer Gene Fennell. The motion was made to recommend to the County Commissioners that Fennell be instructed to proceed with site assessment and costs for 24 to 36 bed jail facility to be considered for a location just north of the current jail. The commissioners will act on this recommendation at our July 6th meeting. It appears from the reports of Fennell that it would not be cost effective to rehab the current building.

Newsflash--In yet another heated special city council meeting at 5 pm on Friday, Nate Cortney was appointed to fill the open Ward III position vacated by the resignation of Vernon Cornell last week. NOTE: next week's regular council meeting will be MONDAY instead of the usual day of Tuesday. See ya there.

Big rain last night, more to the south. The official for Edgemont (5 mi north) was 0.11", while John Koller (5 mi east) got 0.22"...I'm guessing I got 0.75" at my house (8 mi southeast) but checkinig with my neighbor Flora Stearns, she says 0.5", and Joe Falkenburg down on the NE line got 1.2".

We rec'd word yesterday of the death of Bob Smith, formerly of Edgemont. He died at home in Fairburn. Funeral will be Monday at 10 a.m. at the LDS Church in Hot Springs with burial that afternoon at 3 pm at Black Hills National Cemetery at Sturgis.

Newsflash--an Independent candidate has filed a petition for Fall River County Sheriff! Steve McMillan will now face the winner of the Republican Primary which will be decided tomorrow.

Dress rehearsal tonite for SHE'S NOT MY TYPE, the season's first melodrama, which opens Thursday night at the Sale Barn Theatre. Don't miss it! Yours truly will be on stage as Granny Print.

The Cheyenne River Roundup ranch rodeo was held last weekend and was a great success. See this week's paper for the results and some photos...I'll try to upload photos to my shutterfly site later in the week and put a link HERE to help you get to them.

News flash--Special City Council meeting has been called for Monday June 7 at 7 pm at City Hall to accept the resignation of Alderman Vernon Cornell, a Ward 3 councilman.

Newsflash--the south Railroad grade crossing (on Hiway 471) is closed today as BNSF does some work there. Traffic is being detoured around the "back side" of the rail yards.

It's Monday here in Edgemont. Typical newspaper day. The office is abuzz as we get this week's issue ready for press. We also hear a thunder storm moving thru the Hills. One thing about the weather here in the Hills..it can change quickly, and the phrase "Hang on to your Hats" is taken literally.
